The Application Process


There are several steps in the PHA Public Housing application process, as outlined below.

Submit an Application:


As of 2020, the PHA only accepts applications for the Housing Choice Voucher (Section 8) program via their online application portal. Unfortunately, due to the overwhelming length of our current wait list for public housing, the PHA closed its wait list at 11:30AM on Oct 1, 2020. We will keep everyone posted as to when we plan to reopen the list in the future.  Note: Our Housing Choice Voucher waitlist remains open at www.waitlist-centralri.com.

Receipt Confirmation:


Applicant receives a confirmation email stating the application date, preferences, and expected time on the wait list.  Please note that these times are only estimates.

Waiting List:


Applicants will be placed on an Authority-wide wait list based on bedroom size, as well as date and time of application.

Screening & Verification:


When you are nearing the top of the list, the PHA will begin the screening process by calling the client to verify that the preferences selected by them are correct. Then, they begin by looking at household income to see if it falls within HUD’s income limits.  Limits, updated annually, are based on the area median income.

After reviewing documentation of family composition, income and assets, the PHA will look at landlord references, court records, & police records (5 year look back).

They may also requestcharacter references or conduct home visits.

Selection:


When an appropriate unit becomes available, you will be notified.
